2016 Ice Watch

April 1, 2016 · Posted in River Report · Comment

River Report for the Restigouche River The ice run watch is officially on for the Restigouche River. RRL guide Mathieu Boucher has been keeping a watchful eye on the river and snow conditions over recent weeks. There has been a few heavy snow storms over the past few weeks building up a deep base and plenty of ice on the river. The building roofs were shoveled off in the nick of time as it has been raining steady from yesterday through today.

Matt reports that the river is open at Morrissey Rock the center is running and eating at the ice edges. Traveling up Restigouche River Road it is closed at the dip just above the camp. Only the coming days and temperatures will tell when the ice will finally let go. Let’s hope there is no flooding but the ice cuts some new salmon lye’s for the 2016 Atlantic salmon season.

Well Mattie me boy keep those watchful eye’s wide open and us anxious salmon anglers well informed on the advancing conditions.

Mid-Winter River Report

February 22, 2016 · Posted in River Report · Comment

The Restigouche River hides under the ice at last. This winter has been mild from New Brunswick’s on the new camp way of thinking. We were able to keep working well into December as the wind kept down and the temperatures stayed around freezing. The daily freeze thaw cycle created a muddy mess combined with the lack of daylight brought the new camp build to a holt. RRL guide Mathieu spent many days working on his smelt shanty only to watch the bay fail to ice over. It’s getting too late to think of ice fishing now Matty, even though the bay is getting solid with the more consistent seasonal temperatures.

The snow fall has been far below the accumulations of the past few years with a blanket of three feet presently. In southern New Brunswick the ice ran on the Hammond River as the thermometer hit fifty last week. It is hard to say what the next month’s weather will bring. One thing for sure is it will bring us closer to spring.

We all should be getting up for the start of the Atlantic salmon fly fishing season. The RRL still has some prime weeks available so if you haven’t booked your 2016 trips give us a look.

Salmon and a Hurricane

Roger Salmon

Roger Urwin

Hurricane Arthur provided all the fireworks for Canada Day and the Fourth of July in 2014. Arriving to the Canadian Maritimes with a big bang the storm kept most of the outdoor activities to a minimum. Arthur really whipped up the Restigouche River and on a time of the season when you would expect beautiful warm weather Mother Nature gave us the big chill. Winds took down one of the RRL flag poles, a large tree along with many huge limbs around the grounds.

In camp during this week was a fine chap, Roger Urwin from across the pond. Roger, who comes from England might have been raised on rainy, cold weather but not this. Other sports came in quickly as the storm started to rage, not so for Roger and his guide Matty. The two braved the powerful winds, rough water and frigid temperatures, oh boy was it cold.

The determined sport and guide fought all the punishment Arthur could dish out that evening. Despite the least likely salmon taking conditions this fellow managed one fine Atlantic salmon that evening. The two came in cold and wet with big smiles on their faces.

I think we would be hard pressed to find another Atlantic salmon angler that could tell such a story. The RRL hats come off to Roger Urwin one determined fly fisherman with an Atlantic salmon and a hurricane to remember.

Cheers Roger, you sure know how to play the game!
