| Thursday July 22 | Black Bear/Green Butt | 0 | |
One of my favorite flies in my salmon fly box is the black bear/green butt. I had great success at the Restigouche River Lodge in 2009 in late July and August this past season taking 2- 20lbers and a 15lb and 14lb fish plus about a half dozen grilse. The recipe is as follows:rnbutt- UTC Ultra wire, medium-chartreuse followed by Danvilles depth ray nylon wool-fluorescent greenrnbody-black floss with silver wire over wraprnwing-black bear hairrncollar-black hacklernI tie these flies on classic double salmon hooks sizes 2,4,6 and 8 Reply Posted: Friday July 30 Keith- wasn`t that fish - the underwater shot above on this page your fall fish last year or the year prior! July 21st. We had the pleasure of having John with us for a few days, lots of laughs and entertainment, even girls in wigs. And a few bleeps, oh excuse my language, but bleep those fish were movin. He started out slow with not much action, but when he got started there was no stopping him,he registered our 100th fish in the book,he was also out on the frost this am and snagged three more grilse and lost another before leaving for home. Mack & Dan also left this am with quite a number of fish with there John Henry's on them. Great 11days thanks guys. Even I saw three fish jump in home this afternoon, should I get my license so I can swim out and flag them so Billy Boy Hartnett, can find them when he gets back here?????? 4 Fish landed yesterday between Englands and Poker. This morning Poker and Ledges were holding salmon but only the grilse would take. Same thing yesterday. The salmon would make big moves to the fly but no takers. Sea lice on all 4 fish caught this morning. Must be a new run of fish entering the system. I landed a grilse, hooked and dropped a ??? and rolled another in home this morning. The fish I rolled never came back. Good action! I\'ve got Poker and Ledges tonight ...can\'t wait!! Stay tuned...Mack Reply Posted: Thursday July 22 Had a great time and great laughs. 3 fish in Poker before 8am. No better way to start a day in my book. Thanks for everything. | Sunday July 18 | Healing Waters Week a great success! | 0
Restigouche River Lodge played host to two \"Wounded Warriors\" this week and the event was a resounding success! Both Butch Freeman and Dave Walker landed their first Atlantic Salmon this week. Believe it when I tell you the entire staff was thrilled that these Vets landed some of the biggest salmon caught at the Lodge this year! It was a great week of fishing with 20 fish landed and at least that many played and lost. The Sugarman Shrimp was the hot fly, producing most of the BIG FISH. Dave was top dog, landing a 16lb. and an 18lb fish in the same day. Way to go Dave!! Not to be outdone Butch tied into a 20lb+ fish in Home Pool and played it for a good 15 minutes before a long release. We were all surprised by the number of big fish taken this week. We now have 94 fish registered in the book as of today. Wow what a great season so far!! Mack Reply Posted: Thursday July 22 Had a great time and great laughs. 3 fish in Poker before 8am. | Monday July 12 | The "Killer Bee" Lands a Big One | 1
According to sources, Sir William Hartnett landed and 18lb chrome salmon last night in Scowshed. the fish ripped well into backing 3-4 times after a ferocious take. There is a cloud over the alleged fish though. Bill was fishing alone with Deering Irvine, guide and camp manager. There was no camera in the canoe- Rumor is either that Deering may have hooked the fish an handed the rod to "Wild Bill", or just maybe there just was no salmon- we will continue to investigate and report on the incident. If it is true, this breaks a long and distinguished career Bill has made of hooking Grilse at other camps on the Gaspe- The fishing must be great! We continue to have great water and loads of salmon in every pool. They are setting up better, rolling and swirling in the pools more. We are hooking fish every outing! There are open slots still available Reply Posted: Thursday July 15 I heard that a big one landed Killer Bee! Live release!
| Friday July 2 | Report from camp 7/2 | 0 | |
Between last night and this morning, 10 fish (7G, 3S) between 3 canoes were landed at RRL. Don't need to say much more about the numbers of fish coming through the lower 'Gouche right now. I will say that 35 fish have been booked through the week, several Salmon, weighing in the teens, but Grilse seeming to be quickest to the fly.rnrn-ac Reply Posted: Thursday July 15 I heard that a big one landed Killer Bee! | Thursday July 1 | Kalico Reigns Supreme | 0
Despite my best efforts- Kalico is stil King- Even though I was truly blessed to have a 5 Hook up day on Sunday June 27th and then a 4 Hook up day on Wed July 2nd, Scott Kalico, our corporate attny and "ex-friend" still wears the crown, with 7 hook-ups on Saturday June 26th! We have had great #'s of fish in every pool- evryone is engaged and seams to be averaging approx 1-2 hook-ups daily. There have been many salmon between 15-25lbs sighted in every pool every day! | Wednesday June 30 | 6/30 UPDATE | 1
Fish continue to come through all pools in good numbers (at least 30 came through the chute at upper England and were counted through 2 hours this morning). Last night 9 fish hooked and another 5 this morning. All together 6 landed, 1 salmon and 5 grilse. A lot of salmon in pools but hard to get the take. Push of water today may produce a banner evening. -ac Reply Posted: Wednesday June 30 Go get'em boys! Thanks for the updates!!
| Tuesday June 29 | UPDATE - 6/29 | 0 | |
Today is Tuesday, June 29. The log book has 16 fish caught since I arrived here at RRL Saturday night. I fished this morning at England and I covered at least 10 salmon with many more seen. Only 1 fish took, a nice size Salmon that managed to shake the hook. Other anglers hooked up as well. rnrnThere is a steady stream of fish this year and we are getting a good shot at them. While 16 fish in 3 days of fishing are good numbers for the camp, the catch rate is slow compared to what it would be if the fish were truly turned on. Really nice numbers of good solid fish! | Saturday June 12 | Silver Rat Delivers 18 lb Bright! | 0
June 11....What a great week! A nice rise in the water level brought in a nice run of Salmon. We have been fishing over fish all week. Last night, Doc Foster and his wife Nancy came back to the Lodge and reported that Poker was bubbling with fish. I had the lower river rotation the next morning and could hardly sleep. Dale and I headed out with high hopes and decided we should check out Ledges before heading down to Poker. I had already selected a # 2 Super Rat as the fly for the morning. We anchored up and immediately spotted 3 fish holding in the sweet spot. First swing of the fly and a big fish follows the fly the whole way....wow this looks promising! Next cast she comes up on the fly but no take and no follow...mmmm.... this is a big fish...her shoulders look huge! Tied on a #4 Super Rat and the fish comes up on the fly 3 or 4 more times. Next cast a smaller salmon comes up on the fly. The visibility is so good we can see the whole show. I decided to tie on a # 4 Silver Rat double....the fish get a nice rest. Next cast the big fish is back on the fly...it looks like she takes it but I can not feel a thing...what to do??? Screw it...set the hook and cross her eyes...Bang...FISH ON!! I could not believe it! She took the fly @ 8:55 and we were taking her picture at 9:15. WOW...what fun...first salmon for 2010! Sorry for the long winded blogs this week...I enjoyed writing them. I hope to see many more this year. Signing off and heading home. Mack Reply Posted: Wednesday June 30 Go get'em boys! Thanks for the updates!!
| Tuesday June 8 | Playing Poker! | 0 | |
Dale and I dropped into Upper Poker this morning and it was a sight to behold. Big swirls breaking the surface all the way down through the tail water. The fish are in the River .....Hallelujah! The river crested this morning and is starting to fall. You know the story....falling water and the fish start to take. There is a bit of color to the water this morning...probably from the Upsalaquitch. We started out with a #2 Silver Rat. Two drops later a big wake follows the fly through the swing. No take?? Next drop I switched to a #2 Super Rat.....three casts... big swirl...Bang...FISH ON! I set the hook....feel the weight.....Dale says it is 15 lbs. plus...I love this place! Two minutes later he spits the hook....damn!! When we finished up the morning we counted 15 fish....there were most likely a bunch more. Two of the fish were dandies according to Dale..20 lbs or better. Stay tuned...Mack Reply Posted: Wednesday June 30 Go get'em boys! Thanks for the updates!!
| Monday June 7 | River on the rise. Big fish at Ledges | 1 | |
Heavy rain last night...the River rising nicely. Fishing with Deering this morning and we have the Lower River rotation. We started our morning at upper Ledges and never left. How can you leave when the pool is loaded with BIG Fish? It is great to see fish in the system but seeing big fish is why we come here in early June. Deering and I did two drops and spotted a pod of 3 fish sitting in the sweet spot. Anyone who has fished Upper Ledges knows the spot I am talking about. One of these fish had to be over 20 lbs. I tried a green Highlander...no joy. I switched to a Silver Rat and rolled the fish....wow...great fun. We tried a number of different flies ...Deering gave it a go ...but she never budged again. We worked the other fish with her for a while but no takers. Two drops below this group we spotted an even bigger fish. She was sitting in the fast water close to the Quebec side. I have never seen so many fish in Upper Ledges...7 or 8 for sure most likely a lot more. The morning was gone before we knew it. I can not believe that we never had time to check out Poker or any of the other lower pools. Doc Foster will be heading to Upper Ledges this evening. Good luck Doc, I hope you find a taker! Stay tuned. Mack Reply Posted: Monday June 7 Let's get 'em in the book boys!
| Monday June 7 | Perfect conditions 6/6/2010 | 0 | |
Skies are overcast...no wind..River on the rise...up 4 inches...water temp 55.4 and gin clear. Fishing Englands this morning with Gerrie. Scouting Upper Englands and spot a chrome bright 15lb. hen sitting in 3 feet of water about 30 feet off the NB shore. She sat still long enough for me to swing a fly over her a few times ...then off she went...up River. We dropped back and spotted another fish of similar size and tried a Black Bear Green Butt, Green Highlander, Rusty Rat and then finally broke out a Bomber ....Dry fly fishing in early June.... who would have thunk it! Life is good when you are fishing over fish! Big rains in the forecast. Stay tuned! Mack Reply Posted: Monday June 7 Let's get 'em in the book boys!

May 10th opened the season for RRL with this hum-dinger that we were able to get a pic of. angler, Bakos; guide, Craswell. In the past 7 days 2 more fish of approximately the same size have been landed. Not bad and a bit early. Good to see. ![]() Reply Posted: Monday June 7 Let's get 'em in the book boys!
